FasTrak® is the technology used statewide to pay tolls electronically. It’s the easiest and preferred way to pay – and in some cases, it’s the only way. FasTrak allows drivers to skip traffic and explore the Golden State via our 25 tolled bridges, lanes and roads. Exterior toll tags are designed to be attached to the front of the vehicle, on a flat surface.

Methods of Toll Payment
They enable rental car customers to automatically pay tolls on Bay Area toll bridges and, in some cases, express lane. Equipment at toll plazas and along express lanes reads the tag information and the number of axles on your vehicle. This information determines the correct toll and automatically deducts the amount from the FasTrak account’s prepaid balance. If the balance is too low, FasTrak generates an invoice for the full toll amount for bridges or a violation notice in express lanes.

To avoid having a balance that is too low, set up your account for automatic replenishment. FasTrak drivers must have a transponder mounted to their vehicle’s windshield. Transponders make it easier for tolling agencies to charge the correct toll to the appropriate vehicle automatically, resulting in faster processing times with higher levels of accuracy. State law requires a transponder to be in the vehicle or valid license plates properly mounted to the vehicle. If you drive in an express lane without a FasTrak toll tag or a plan through your rental agency, you will be charged the toll plus penalties.
